What's New in January 2026
January 2026 brought some of the biggest updates to Wunderfold ever! This update makes it easier to preview your folds, create patterns faster, and get better-looking patterns right out of the gate — with less time spent fiddling with settings.
More detailed help pages and tutorials for many of these features are coming soon. In the meantime, here’s a walkthrough of what’s new. The features marked with a ⭐️ are specific to Wunderfold Pro.
A Fresh New Logo
Section titled “A Fresh New Logo”Wunderfold has a new logo.
The original logo served its purpose well, but it didn’t scale or adapt as cleanly as needed over time. The new design keeps the same “W” and open-book concept in a simpler, more flexible form that works reliably at both small and large sizes, and across light and dark backgrounds. The refreshed indigo and sky blue palette balances creativity with a polished, dependable feel.
3D Preview
Section titled “3D Preview”Wunderfold has added a 3D preview for everyone, on all fold types! This has been requested many times, and is one of our favorite new features.
The 3D preview lets you rotate, zoom, and inspect a realistic rendering of your folded book before exporting or printing. This makes it much easier to visualize how your finished book will turn out, choose options that will work best for your design, and correct issues.
Additional Preview Improvements
Section titled “Additional Preview Improvements”If you’ve been using the 3D preview already, you might notice a few improvements have already been made to it:
- We’ve added the 3D preview directly to the layer setup, so you can see how your layers will look as you edit them. Jump to the multilayer section to see a screenshot.
- Color-filled folds (usually done with cardstock or colored paper) can also be simulated. This is especially handy for the two-tone and three-tone styles, which are usually color-filled. This option is available for all fold types other than multilayer and MMF types.
- The 3D preview image is also available to use as the pattern image on exported patterns.
New Three-Tone Mode ⭐️
Section titled “New Three-Tone Mode ⭐️”Three-tone mode is now available for Pro users, allowing you to create simple cut-and-fold patterns with three distinct tones instead of two. It functions just like two-tone mode, with an additional threshold, creating an additional mid-tone. Compare the light/dark/black shades in the three-tone image below to the gray/black shades in the two tone image:
It’s especially nice for logos with three or more colors, or photos with a lot of shading or texture — faces, fabric, or anything where an extra middle tone helps bring out the details of the image more clearly.
You’ll also see the preview is using the new color-filled option – two-tone and three-tone patterns usually use this technique to bring out the shading of the image.
Multilayer Improvements ⭐️
Section titled “Multilayer Improvements ⭐️”Multilayer mode got several nice upgrades including a brand new option (shadow modes for layers) plus a few things that make it easier to set up your layer colors and layer order.
3D Preview In Layer Setup
Section titled “3D Preview In Layer Setup”Now you can see the 3D preview while you edit layers, making it easy visualize your book, and getting rid of guess work.
Shadow Modes for Layers
Section titled “Shadow Modes for Layers”Each layer now supports shadow modes, helping create more realistic depth and separation between layers.
Smarter Gray Color Detection
Section titled “Smarter Gray Color Detection”This one’s a bit hard to explain… we’ll add a tutorial on this one sometime. Here’s my best attempt at explaining it:
When creating a multilayer pattern using grayscale layer colors, layer colors are now automatically selected to better match the source image. To use this feature, click the Gray button in Layer setup, and add the number of layers that you need. Wunderfold will automatically choose shades to suit the image, and of course you can set the colors yourself as usual.
This saves time and improves out-of-the-box results, making it practical to try out multilayer on a much broader range of images.
Reverse Button in Layer Setup
Section titled “Reverse Button in Layer Setup”You can now reverse layers directly from the layer setup panel instead of rebuilding or reordering manually.
This allows you to quickly experiment with layers and their orientation. It’s a small change, but saves a lot of time.
Automatic Smart Thresholds
Section titled “Automatic Smart Thresholds”Thresholds are now set automatically using some fancy math. If you’re not sure what a ‘threshold’ even is, that’s fine — this update is especially for you.
Wunderfold now starts with a threshold setting that brings out the main shapes and contrast in your image, so most of the time you’ll get a good result right away without needing to touch anything. It makes getting started faster and less confusing.
You can still fine-tune the threshold yourself when needed.
Graph Pattern Alignment Line ⭐️
Section titled “Graph Pattern Alignment Line ⭐️”Exported graph patterns now include a page alignment line to make lining up the pattern to your book easier.
This small tweak really helps with speed and accuracy as you fold!
Maker and Pro Demo Switching
Section titled “Maker and Pro Demo Switching”Demo mode now lets you switch between Maker and Pro using a simple toggle.
This makes it easier to compare Maker and Pro features and see what they both have to offer.
Simplified Drag & Drop Image Loading
Section titled “Simplified Drag & Drop Image Loading”Drag-and-drop to load an image is easier – you could do it before, but it had to be right on the Choose Image button, and wasn’t obvious. Now when you drag a file onto the page, you’ll see that you can drop the file anywhere.
